Tennant Ancestry East Neuk of Fife Scotland

William Tennant, (1784-1848). Poet and scholar, was born on 15 May 1784 in Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, and was educated at the University of St Andrews between 1799 and 1801. An accident in childhood left Tennant lame and his early years were spent at home, a period he used to further his study of Hebrew, Arabic and Persian. Between 1813 and 1834, when he was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at St Andrews, he worked as a schoolmaster in various parts of Scotland. Ill health forced him to retire in 1848 and he died that same year on 14 October in Anstruther. Tennant published his Synopsis of Chaldaic and Syriac Grammar in 1840 and it remained a standard textbook for many years. He was a prolific poet but most of his work has been long forgotten: he wrote two historical verse dramas. Cardinal Beacon (1823) and John Baliol (1825), and a long poem couched in heroic terms, The Thane of Fife (1822). His monument is the successful anster FAIR, a long poem about country people celebrating a traditional festival; written in English, with a Scots accent never far away in its comic rhymes, it is also notable for its stanza form, which may have suggested the ottava rima used by Lord byron in his Don Juan. Tennant's other work of note, dedicated to Sir DAVID lyndsay, is Papistry Storm'd, a spirited description of the destruction of St Andrews Cathedral.

Works: Anster Fair (1812); The Dominie's Disaster (1816); editor, The Poems of Allan Ramsay (1819); The Thane of Fife (1822); Cardinal Beaton (1823); John Balliol (1825); Papistry Stormed (1827); Critical Remarks on the Psalms of David. (1830); Synopsis of Chaldaic and Syriac Grammar (1840).

Lockhart Ancestry East Neuk of Fife Scotland

Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, n(1887—1970). Journalist and man of letters. He was born on 2nd September 1887 in Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, and was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and in Berlin. Between 1908 and 1910 he worked on a rubber plantation in Malaya, and in 1912 he entered the diplomatic service, taking up an appointment in Moscow. During World War I, Lockhart maintained Britain's diplomatic presence in Russia but when Anglo-Soviet relations deteriorated in 1918 he was arrested and sentenced to death, accused of being implicated in a plot to assassinate Lenin. He was saved by being exchanged for the Soviet politician Litvinoff, whom the British had arrested in retaliation, but the experience did not deter Lockhart from pursuing his career in the Foreign Office and he served next in Czechoslovakia. Between 1928 and 1939 he lived in London, working as a journalist and writer, and it was during this period that he wrote the books for which he is best remembered: Memoirs of a British Agent (1932), Retreat from Glory (1934) and Return to Malaya (1936). He returned to serve with the Foreign Office during World War II and was knighted in 1943. Lockhart never lost the image of himself as a swashbuckling adventurer and something of that style pervades all his work. His ability to win friends in high places and his knowledge of Soviet and central European politics give his work an authority that might otherwise have been lost through his indiscreet and self-centred style. His volumes of memoirs My Rod, my Comfort (1949) and My Scottish Youth (1937) offer entertaining accounts of some of the byways of his life. He died on 27 February 1970 at Hove in Sussex. Works include; Memoirs of a British Agent (1932); Retreat from Glory (1934); Return to Malaya (1936); My Scottish Youth (1937); Guns or Butter (1938); Comes the Reckoning (1947); My Rod, my Comfort (1949); The Marines were There (1950); Jan Masaryk (1951); Scotch (1951); My Europe (1952); What Happened to the Czechs (1953); Your England (1955); The Two Revolutions (1957).

East Neuk Of Fife Presentation

Enjoy my most popular presentation and tour of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The East Neuk, is one of the main attractions of Fife, Scotland. It is a stretch of coastline dotted with a series of wonderful fishing villages, each clustered around its own harbour. The villages of Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail, Pittenweem, and Elie are a joy to discover with their wealth of vernacular architecture. This is the area of Scotland in which I was raised, in the old fishing village of Cellardyke, often referred to as East Anstruther, but not by me, for I am Dyker through and through, and always will be.
