Upper Largo Parish East Neuk of Fife Scotland

Upper Largo Parish, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. " Largo is bounded by the parishes of Kilconquhar, Newburn, Ceres and Scoonie. It contains the villages of Upper Largo, Lower Largo, Lundin Mill and New Gilston. It is about four miles north to south and three miles in breadth. To the west of Largo Law, a deeply wooded ravine, Keil’s Den, intersects the parish from north to south. It is laid out with footpaths and is very picturesque, so is a favourite resort for all those who visit in the summer for sea bathing. The village of Lower Largo stands on the bay. Most of the houses have a decaying look, being mostly built from red sandstone taken from the sea. In old times a large trade was carried on here with Holland, and more recently Norway, but that is long at an end. Upper Largo is a well-built village with a number of good houses and shops. There is an institution in the village called Wood’s Hospital, for the maintenance of indigent persons of the name of Wood. Both Upper and Lower Largo are favourite resorts for sea bathing. The village of Lundin Mill is chiefly inhabited by weavers. The village of New Gilston is chiefly inhabited by miners. A noted native of the parish was Alexander Selkirk, the prototype of Robinson Crusoe. Besides the parish church, there is a Free Church at Kirkton, and a UP Church and a Baptist Church at Lower Largo. " Edited from Westwood's Directory for the counties of Fife and Kinross published 1862.

Anstruther Easter Parish East Neuk of Fife Scotland

Anstruther Easter Parish, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. " Anstruther Easter, a royal burgh, in the county of Fife, is twenty two miles east from Kirkcaldy and about ten miles south from St Andrews. It has an excellent harbour which is the chief asylum for vessels overtaken by storms in the Firth of Forth. It was a place of great importance before the union with England, carrying on an extensive trade with Holland and France; and, from its contiguity to Cellardyke, it is still one of the first fishing stations in Scotland. The trade is principally of a domestic nature; baking, brewing, tanning and fish-curing are the most prominent branches; but there is likewise a considerable proportion of business done in the export of grain, potatoes, etc: a number of coasters and several square-rigged vessels belong to the port; and a steam packet plies 3 times a week between it and Leith, conveying hence grain, fish, etc, and returning with merchants' goods. It is the station of a custom house whose district extends from Edenmouth to Largo Bay. Branches respectively of the National Bank of Scotland and the Eastern Bank of Scotland are settled here. The town is governed by three baillies, a treasurer and fifteen councillors elected under the Scotch Borough Reform Act. This burgh is united with St Andrew's, Cupar, Crail, Kilrenny, Anstruther Wester and Pittenweem in returning one member to parliament. It is worthy of note that Dr Chalmers, the celebrated orator and divine, and professor Tennant, author of Anster Fair, were natives of this town." From Slater's Directory published 1852.

Kilconquhar Parish, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. " Kilconquhar is bounded by Elie, Cameron, Ceres, St Monans, Carnbee, Newburn, Largo and the River Forth. It is nine miles from north to south and two miles in breadth. There are 2900 acres under cultivation, 1600 under pasture, 800 under wood and about 200 acres of links. Kilconquhar Loch, nearly two miles in circumference, boasts some of the largest eel and pike in the country. It is also frequented by a large quantity of duck, teal and swans. There are 1450 cattle and over 500 horses, the latter being reared for the market and sold at 4 years old. There are 24 thrashing mills. Coal is abundant in the parish. Nearly 300 persons are employed weaving dowlasses, checks and sheetings for the Kirkland, Kirkcaldy and Dundee markets; yet there are no spinning mills nor manufactures in the parish. Besides the Church at Kilconquhar, there is a chapel of ease at Largoward, and UP churches at Kilconquhar and Colinsburgh. There is a parish school and six others. There are twelve public houses. Earlsferry village and royal burgh consists of a single street with bye lanes, intimately joined with Elie. The inhabitants are weavers, fishers and colliers. Colinsburgh is a burgh of barony under the Balcarres family. Its main industry is leather currying. Kilconquhar village also has a tan-works." Crail Parish East Neuk of Fife Scotland

Crail Parish, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. " Crail is a parish and royal burgh, and a sea-port, the latter twenty six miles east from Kirkcaldy, and ten miles south-east from St Andrews. Its importance has greatly declined, and notwithstanding it possesses great capabilities as a port, it enjoys but very little trade; this, in some measure, may be ascribed to the inconvenience of its harbour, for it is eligibly situated. Its principal exports consist of grain and potatoes: the imports are chiefly coals. Sixteen vessels belong to the port. The town consists of two streets, and two or three lanes; of the former one is broad and spacious, containing some good houses, several of which are of that massive and antique description which indicate past wealth. Crail was erected into a royal burgh by Robert Bruce. In conjunction with St Andrews, Cupar Fife, the Anstruthers, Kilrenny and Pittenweem, it returns one member to parliament. The parish church, a free church, and an united presbyterian chapel, are the places of worship. The celebrated James Sharp, archbishop of St Andrews, was once minister of the church, and his handwriting is still to be seen in the session records." From Slater's Directory published 1852.

East Neuk Episcopal Church Fife Scotland

East Neuk Episcopal Church Fife Scotland. Welcome to the Episcopal Church in the East Neuk. We have two church buildings, one dedicated to St Michael's and All Angels in Elie and the other dedicated to St John the Evangelist in Pittenweem. In Pittenweem, which means, place of the cave, there survives a cave which is dedicated to the memory of St Fillan, a Celtic saint, who is reputed to have been here in the seventh century. Remains of a twelfth century monastery built by Queen Margaret are still occupied, though somewhat modified. It has been used at various times over recent generations as a residence for local clergy and other families. The East Neuk is a fascinating part of Scotland and forms part of the Kingdom of Fife. When you visit the area we hope that you will find time to seek out the churches in the area and explore something of the local history as well as the scenery, wildlife, sporting facilities, beaches, rocks and rolling countryside.

Tennant Ancestry East Neuk of Fife Scotland

William Tennant, (1784-1848). Poet and scholar, was born on 15 May 1784 in Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, and was educated at the University of St Andrews between 1799 and 1801. An accident in childhood left Tennant lame and his early years were spent at home, a period he used to further his study of Hebrew, Arabic and Persian. Between 1813 and 1834, when he was appointed Professor of Oriental Languages at St Andrews, he worked as a schoolmaster in various parts of Scotland. Ill health forced him to retire in 1848 and he died that same year on 14 October in Anstruther. Tennant published his Synopsis of Chaldaic and Syriac Grammar in 1840 and it remained a standard textbook for many years. He was a prolific poet but most of his work has been long forgotten: he wrote two historical verse dramas. Cardinal Beacon (1823) and John Baliol (1825), and a long poem couched in heroic terms, The Thane of Fife (1822). His monument is the successful anster FAIR, a long poem about country people celebrating a traditional festival; written in English, with a Scots accent never far away in its comic rhymes, it is also notable for its stanza form, which may have suggested the ottava rima used by Lord byron in his Don Juan. Tennant's other work of note, dedicated to Sir DAVID lyndsay, is Papistry Storm'd, a spirited description of the destruction of St Andrews Cathedral.

Works: Anster Fair (1812); The Dominie's Disaster (1816); editor, The Poems of Allan Ramsay (1819); The Thane of Fife (1822); Cardinal Beaton (1823); John Balliol (1825); Papistry Stormed (1827); Critical Remarks on the Psalms of David. (1830); Synopsis of Chaldaic and Syriac Grammar (1840).

Lockhart Ancestry East Neuk of Fife Scotland

Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart, n(1887—1970). Journalist and man of letters. He was born on 2nd September 1887 in Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, and was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and in Berlin. Between 1908 and 1910 he worked on a rubber plantation in Malaya, and in 1912 he entered the diplomatic service, taking up an appointment in Moscow. During World War I, Lockhart maintained Britain's diplomatic presence in Russia but when Anglo-Soviet relations deteriorated in 1918 he was arrested and sentenced to death, accused of being implicated in a plot to assassinate Lenin. He was saved by being exchanged for the Soviet politician Litvinoff, whom the British had arrested in retaliation, but the experience did not deter Lockhart from pursuing his career in the Foreign Office and he served next in Czechoslovakia. Between 1928 and 1939 he lived in London, working as a journalist and writer, and it was during this period that he wrote the books for which he is best remembered: Memoirs of a British Agent (1932), Retreat from Glory (1934) and Return to Malaya (1936). He returned to serve with the Foreign Office during World War II and was knighted in 1943. Lockhart never lost the image of himself as a swashbuckling adventurer and something of that style pervades all his work. His ability to win friends in high places and his knowledge of Soviet and central European politics give his work an authority that might otherwise have been lost through his indiscreet and self-centred style. His volumes of memoirs My Rod, my Comfort (1949) and My Scottish Youth (1937) offer entertaining accounts of some of the byways of his life. He died on 27 February 1970 at Hove in Sussex. Works include; Memoirs of a British Agent (1932); Retreat from Glory (1934); Return to Malaya (1936); My Scottish Youth (1937); Guns or Butter (1938); Comes the Reckoning (1947); My Rod, my Comfort (1949); The Marines were There (1950); Jan Masaryk (1951); Scotch (1951); My Europe (1952); What Happened to the Czechs (1953); Your England (1955); The Two Revolutions (1957).

Enjoy my most popular presentation and tour of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The East Neuk, is one of the main attractions of Fife, Scotland. It is a stretch of coastline dotted with a series of wonderful fishing villages, each clustered around its own harbour. The villages of Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail, Pittenweem, and Elie are a joy to discover with their wealth of vernacular architecture. This is the area of Scotland in which I was raised, in the old fishing village of Cellardyke, often referred to as East Anstruther, but not by me, for I am Dyker through and through, and always will be.
